About surviving&protecting yourself from an earthquake

Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters. They can cause widespread damage and loss of life. However, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your family in the event of an earthquake. In this article, I have gathered some of the useful tips and advices on how to survive and protect your family and yourself from an ongoing earthquake.

  • Have an earthquake plan. This plan should include where you will go and what you will do if an earthquake strikes. Make sure everyone in your family knows the plan and where to meet if you are separated.
  • Secure your home. Anchor heavy furniture to walls and install safety latches on cabinets. Store flammable liquids and chemicals in earthquake-safe containers.
  • Have an emergency kit. This kit should include food, water, first aid supplies, and other essentials that you will need in the event of an earthquake.

What to do during an earthquake:

  • Drop, cover, and hold on. This is the best way to protect yourself from falling objects. Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and stay in the car. Do not try to drive through an earthquake.
  • If you are outside, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines.

After an earthquake:

  • Check for injuries. If you are injured, seek medical attention immediately.
  • Stay away from damaged buildings. There is a risk of further collapse.
  • Listen to the radio or TV for updates.
  • Help your neighbors if you can.
Following these tips will not only alleviate the chances of being individually harmed by the earthquake, but also will help those around you including your family, neighbours and your friends. Make sure to disseminate these tips with your friends and the people you know.
